How to dress to impress!
Have you ever felt like you don’t really like the clothes in your wardrobe and you don’t feel great when you wear them? Yep, me too.
After I had my son, I was at home, looking after him and I was wearing daggy clothes and even some clothes left over from my pregnancy. I was feeling a bit blah, and didn’t love the clothes in my wardrobe. I didn’t realize that the way that I was dressing was having an impact on how I felt.
One day I decided to clean out my wardrobe and give away clothes that didn’t fit me or I didn’t like. I organized my wardrobe and bought some clothes that I loved, and made me feel good.
Everyday I would get up and put something nice on, and when I looked in the mirror, it made me feel confident and positive.
The habit of dressing nicely everyday, made a big difference to how I felt about myself and set a positive tone for the day.
Here are 3 things you can do to build the habit of dressing nicely.
1. Clean out your wardrobe
Go through your wardrobe 1 section at a time and try everything on. If it doesn’t fit you anymore or you haven’t worn it in 6 months, pass it on to someone else who will enjoy wearing it. Then re-organize your wardrobe into your pants, tops, skirts, dresses, shoes, accessories and underwear. Make sure everything you have left in your wardrobe are things that you love. Then write a list of things you would like to add into your wardrobe, so next time you go shopping, you know exactly what you want to buy.
2. Plan your outfits
Have you ever woken up in the morning and put an outfit on and it didn’t look good, and then you tried on something else and you didn’t like that either, and you ran out of time and wore something you just threw together last minute? Yes, me too.
The best way to love what you wear everyday and feel good in it, is to plan out your outfits.
If you work 5 days a week, plan you outfits for every day, and hang it up in your wardrobe ready to go. If you have an event or something special to get dressed up for, try on your whole outfit the night before and make sure everything is clean, steamed and ready to go. Planning out your outfits the night before means you have one thing less to do in the morning, and will help your morning run smoothly, which will set you up for a good day.
3. Wear things that bring you joy.
A few years ago I opened my wardrobe and thought, I don’t have anything to wear! Now, I actually had a lot of things to wear, its just that my wardrobe was too full and I didn’t love all of them. I did a big clean out and gave lots of things away, and what I had left in my wardrobe I loved and it brought me joy. I love the feeling of putting an outfit on and feeling good in it, and now my wardrobe is full of clothes that bring me joy and I feel confident in.
When you are shopping for clothes, make sure that you love them as soon as you put them on.
If you kind of like them, but are not sure, just put them back and think about it. If you try something on and you feel great straight away, and it bring you joy, then add it to your wardrobe.
Throughout our lives, we are going to go through different stages and need to change our wardrobe, you might be going back to work after having a baby, you might have changed body shapes recently, you might have retired and have started a new chapter in your life. Just like our lives are full of transitions, so are our wardrobes. We need to try new styles, new colours, new textures, as our lives and bodies change.
Have fun with what you wear as it will help you build more confidence and love who you are.
